Oddities and Art of Hitting

This article will try to convince you that most of the skills needed for a good baseball swing are movements unnatural need to be trained in time and constantly reinforced. I will also make an attempt to explain why some hitters peak, while others continue improving over time. Unfortunately, some peak before reaching a double digit age.

Natural vs. unnatural movements

Can you think in any other sport where you need direct force or energy to a target that is not in front of you? You might say tennis, but think of how a player Tennis set to receive a service. He or she is facing opposition. What about basketball? No, you are facing the basket when shooting, perhaps a hockey or soccer goalie? Sorry, these individuals are square to the shot that came to them. Anyway, you will probably understand where I come from. Therefore, think of how a batter is set in the table. Now, think about what direction the opposing force (the ball) is coming. Actually comes from the side. In fact, from a baseball swing requires you to apply force against, this is the best position to be in. However, the best way to apply this force unfortunately contains movements that are in a sense unnatural. Let me explain.

Hands

When we hit, our hands are at or slightly above shoulder level. In the approach we try to keep your hands and the barrel above the ball. If you think about it, this is an unnatural movement. We are fighting forces of gravity. The natural thing to do would be to fall into our hands to waist level and then jump from there. Try it! See how it feels natural. Unfortunately, This natural movement would result in a slow, long, ending with a less than adequate. We do however see a lot of young hitters who take natural approach. We coaches covering many of these movements such as defects. If it's natural, why call it a flaw? Simply because the mechanics correct a swing is not natural.

The swing line

We are standing in the batter's box with a bat in his hand. We are then told to swing the bat while ensures that the canyon is a straight path through the hitting zone, and not around it. We are told to open our body in a way that we are sure not to pull out our front. Make sure the barrel does not get out too soon, either! One more thing, these things must be done in a sequence. UNNATURAL TALK!

Come to think of natural movements. First, you're holding a bat that is longer than the arm. Ninety percent of the weight of the bat is in the superior (not to mention being the most far out of the hands as well.) If I told you to hit the average person, making it look natural movement like?

1) is likely to start the swing with your hands, because that is where the bat. NATURAL but WRONG!

2) The first part of the bat to move probably would be the barrel. NATURAL but WRONG!

3) The barrel is likely to travel in a circular path. NATURAL but WRONG!

4) Your front (Including the head) is likely to open by the weight of the barrel and the course taken. NATURAL but incorrect.

5) Finally, if you use your hips at all to rotate both hips in a circular motion. NATURAL but incorrect.

These are five natural movements that coaches spend many hours trying to correct, because in our book are considered defects. The next time you are working with hitters, keep these ideas in mind. Pay attention to these failures and see what that seem so natural to the batter. Make them understand that hitting is not a simple skill due to the fact that it is not natural. Use analogies, as winding / unwinding a spring to start training the natural thought. They need to start developing a natural framework of the mind when it comes to hit before they can be separated from the group of "thinkers natural ". Not every hitter will be able to understand all these concepts. The physiological makeup will not allow in-depth natural. It is the individual who can seen in and say to yourself, "He gets!" that has infinite potential. Now, it's all about practice, practice, practice.
